Geez, I hope she's gone to a gastroenterologist. If not, I'd go to see an ND (naturopathic doctor). They might find that she's got some sort of bad bacteria in her stomach. Wow, that sucks! I'm surprised she is getting any nourishment at all! She should try some sort of specialists, like at the Mayo clinic or something. If her current doctors aren't really worried, she should find some other ones. There are plenty of bad doctors out there!

It probably is IBS, but that can be very serious when you are the one with it. Severe cramping, pain, constipation/diahrea at the same time, all of these are IBS symptoms. And the food, you are correct, I believe alot of that is dependent on your emotional health at that particular time, like you might be mad about something at work, causing you stress because you feel your hands are tied. You hold the stress in, and your intestines take notice, and decide they don't want to cooperate, so then you get the evil symptoms that drive you crazy, cuz you can't pinpoint the problem, and the cycle continues. I've had ulcers and IBS, I believe both were triggered by my lifestyle at the time, bad relationship, poor decisions etc. holding the stress internally. According to the docs, they say it's just some people have weak digestive systems, and some don't. I also had gallstones, at nineteen, very young for that, but yeah, it's related to foods we eat and our "weak" systems rebel, almost like an allergic reaction. The only way I know to control the symptoms to some degree, is to "schedule" yourself to use the restroom, I know it sounds weird, but stuff lies inside you for along time, and it rots, gross, but once you get your body to "go" when you want to, and not in a panic trying to find a restroom out in public, it makes things easier to cope with.Knowing where those restrooms are helps too, maybe stopping by before you continue a long shopping event, so you don't get caught at the cashier, feeling embarrassment or despair. You also can try Pepto-Bismol during an attack, it will help with the cramping/diahrea part, and help you deal nausea. Saying it's just IBS is wrong, it isn't simple to fix, and it truly effects people lives. Good luck.

It does sound like IBS. May be worth getting a book on to see what trigger foods may be. Sometimes it can be combinations of food so it may not be clear until you do food journals, etc. But it is something that there is no cure for, so she should at least learn to manage it!

she needs to see a different doctor. i have ibs but i also had a bad gall bladder at one time. i would just bet she has a bad one.mine wasnt that bad according to the tests, but when they got it out, it was worse than they had thought, so its probably just not showing up in her test results. so she needs to see another doctor and have better testing done.
