Of course times will vary from school to school. Normally 5:15-5:25 will give you first place. But there is a school that My team competes against that's an all boys school and they run more like 5:10's. It depends on the school but I think if you can get your time down about 20 seconds you'll place first or second.

In middle school/junior high, from meets I saw, the winning time is typically about 5:20-5:30. So you have at least 15 seconds to go. School records are usually about 5:00.
Of course, if you're in a meet with a weak field of athletes, you could win with 5:50, and in maybe the regional middle school meet, it'd take 5:05 to win.

middle school doesnt matter. its high school. but if you can already do a 5:44 than you should do good. the high school times are very fast, though. at my last track meet, the fastest people in the 4x1600m were at about 4:30. me and the three other guys all ran under 6:00, but still came in 9th out of 19th.

I had a meet a few days back and 1st place in the mile got around 5:20-30 so you would definatly be a competitor especially if you get trained.

Middle School track times are ussually kept to the school and they rarely post it anywhere besides the campus, but in High School they ussually post it on their website.
