I believe that death and non-existence is not our final doom. There has to be something beyond death. What that is remains a mystery for there is no solid proof as of yet.
Some people think we go to a heaven or hell. Others believe we go to some limbo heaven, then come back in another life for more experiences. I guess we'll know when it finally happens.
I had a co-worker pass away a couple of years ago. We were'nt close friends, but we spoke on occasion. A few days after his death, I had a dream that I was in a beautiful landscape, like some kind of well taken care of park. There were many people walking around, talking, laughing, etc. I then saw my co-worker, Paul. I called out to him a couple of times, the second time he finally heard me and approached me. I spoke to him saying, " I thought you were dead." He responded, "no I'm fine here." Then, of all the questions I could have asked, I asked him this one question...."What did you think of the funeral?" His response...."It was pretty good." That was it. The dream ended and I woke up. Pretty weird huh? I still don't know why I asked him that question. The experience seemed realistic though. I told other co-workers about this dream and told them that Paul is doing just fine.

The biblical hell:
the common grave of mankind.
Death = cessation of life.

I don't know because I haven't died yet. Unfortunately nobody ever comes back and tells us what to expect, either.

But I have the courage to say that I don't know rather than fall for some concocted story and an empty promise.

I suppose I'll find out when I die, but until then I have a full life to lead instead of waiting around to die for an empty promise of eternal life.

Of course we don't go where we "deserve" to thank God!But from my understanding the Bible tells us that the body is the "house" in which our spirit or soul lives. Our body is not really us; it is just the house in which our soul lives in. So when Jesus Christ comes back at his second coming, he will be bringing back with him the souls of all the dead saved believers so that those souls can be reunited with their newly resurrected bodies. What a great day we have in store!

There are a lot of things that I would like to think happen when we die. My personal favorite is that I finally get invited to the Playboy Mansion as Hef's guest of honor.

But seriously - what good is it to speculate on something that we have absolutely no data on? We are just engaging in wishful thinking. It might be fun to think about but it has nothing to do with reality.

Sorry bout that

I personally believe in reincarnation and karma. When I die, I expect to go to a place of rest in between lifetimes, to review my life and try to understand an learn from it, then if I still have Karma that needs to be worked out, I expect to find myself in a lifetime which will best suit the needs of whatever I need to learn. However, regardless of what I believe at the moment, I imagine we will all find our selves looking around the afterlife, and going 'gee, this isn't what I expected..."

Purgatory

Catholics Believe

That, as nothing defiled can enter heaven (Apoc. 21:27), souls with the slightest stain upon them must go through a process of purgation before coming face to face with Him "whose eyes are too pure to behold evil" (Hab. 1:13).

"I am thy father's spirit, Doomed for a certain term to walk the night, And for the day, confined to waste in fires Till the foul crimes done in my days of nature Are burned and purged away!" (Hamlet, Act 1, scene 5).

Catholics Believe

That there is a "prison," a place of temporal punishment, where souls (whose guilt of sin has been forgiven) go to make restitution for their transgressions:

"I (Christ Jesus) say to thee, thou wilt not come out from it, until thou has paid the last penny" (St. Matt. 5:25-26).

Catholics Believe

That the prayers, good works, acts of mercy, of the living help the souls of the departed who are in purgatory.

"Pray for my soul. More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of" (Tennyson).

"Lay this body anywhere: be not concerned about that: but one favor do I beg of you, that wherever you may be you will always make a remembrance of me, when you stand at the altar of God" (St. Monica to her son St. Augustine).

The dust shall return to earth, the spirit (the breath of life) will return to God who gave it. Eccl 12:7

Scriptures say... from dust you came to dust you shall return. Hell is a replacement word for grave and pit, and refers to a pit where the dead went. this cleansing of fire is a good idea as it destroys the disease. but it destroys forever, not burns forever.

For the most part, we go into coffins and then into the ground. Some of us are burnt, and so enter the air.
