Only thing you can do is "Talk" to him. Explain something came up and you had no way of reaching him. If he's your "boyfriend" he'll understand......if he doesn't understand, time for you to move on~
Communication, Honesty and Trust are the keys to a long healthy relationship*

How could you not have a way to contact him?
If he was coming to pick you up, you could have left a note on the door. If you were meeting somewhere, you could have left a message for him there!
Sit him down and explain what happen and hope for the best! If that ever happens again though, there's always a way to get a message to someone.

Sheesh.. you did stand him up !.. why wouldnt he think that? (I would... either do what ya say yer gonna do or dont bother.. unless you were in a coma from a train accident i wouldnt let you off the hook for it.. I doubt I'd do anything more than to be civil to you in the future in fact)
What do you do? On this one.. prob not much.. but for future reference.. dont make committments you cant keep...
I do kindda find it hard to believe in this day and age of email blackberries, cellphones and telephones that you couldnt contact him... yeah I'm skeptical...
Hmm I noticed you failed to mention why you "couldnt go with him" after you already had committed to going.. Please lets hear that part of the story...
I'm sure he'll be alright.. once he finds a more reliable GF...

Tell him what your reason was that you couldn't go and that you would never do that, then ask if you can try to do something again next weekend.

Be honest and tell him that you couldn't contact him and why you couldn't go.
Make it up by another date.
