The link below is a form from the California Franchise Tax Board to request a copy of your return. Whoever said their is no guarantee the state kept a copy makes 'naive' sound like a complement. If they don't keep a copy, they can't use it to AUDIT you. Besides, when have you every heard of the government deliberately getting rid of anything? The lose things, but they don't deliberately get rid of them.

Yes you can, just contact the state tax service and request a copy. It might cost you some money though.

Did you file it yourself or have a tax preparer file it for you? If you had a preparer do it, then MAYBE they kept a copy, maybe not.

There are no guarantees that your State kept a copy after they were done with it. Maybe they did, maybe not. As a last resort, I would ask for a copy from the state tax agency,
