We have booked two back-to-back cruises to Alaska in May and we are each being charged $50 twice -- is this the way it is supposed to work?

Yes, unfortunately any time you cruise to Alaska that tax is going to be added. Even though you are doing a back-to-back it is still considered two trips, which means paying the taxes twice. It is just like paying the regular port fees and taxes, whether you or on a back-to-back or just do two cruises, you always have to pay them.
Have a great time in Alaska, it is a wonderful cruise!

I'm sure you can find more information than what I have, but this article was printed by USA Today on Alaska's $50 "head tax."

yeah because you are doing 2 cruises, so think of it as 2 trips, you have tax per trip, check with the cruise line's accounting department.
