Often in movies you see the military as almost a second government, almost independent from the main government branches. The question is, in real life, does the government have total control over its army and military, or does the military usually represent itself as a separate part of the goverment besides its branches?

Your question proves that liberals live in a fantasy world based on what they've seen coming out of Hollywood movies. Your knowledge of our government and the military is appalling...

No, because the military works for and is a component of the government and the government has other, additional sources of power.

The government does have total control over the military except where orders are in obvious violation to the regulations and/or laws covering the military service. However, the people that determine illegality are military judges through up to the US Supreme Court.

Makes no difference, since the drive-by media controls 'em both. Want to change that? Don't believe what the paparazzi puts out.

Bush did NOT steal an election. He was voted in- twice. But the liberals believe that only liberal Democrats have the right to be President. And all who vote for them are supporting that idea. Wake up and stop stepping in the doo-doo. Stop being a puppet of the liberals.

It depends on the country. In the U.S. and most of the Western world the military does not have more power than the civil government elected by the people.

My best guess would be, well no. I am sure if they military had complete control of themselves and what they do, they might have done things a bit differently in Iraq. So I think that they do whatever they are told for the most part.

No, the senate and congress is where the real power is located. The joint chiefs make suggestions to these two bodies of government, but it is congress and the senate who ultimately decide on hostile actions against a foreign nation.

I wish the military had more power than the government! The only time the military does is under martial law. Other than that, we are soo defenseless against all the crap that comes down. Like when freakin Rumsfield extended my unit after we completed our year deployment.

Yes. The guys with the guns always have final say. Most of the time it is easier to let the politicians make the decisions and take the heat. Governing a county is a dammed if you do, dammed if you dont situation.
