I'll agree with the previous posts that there no easy answer to the question "what is it like" but, having been myself, I certainly recommend that you go to find out for yourself.

The country, being so large, is very diverse. Thankfully, a lot of the historical buildings and artefacts were not destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. New structures going up are impressive. The landscapes towards the south and west are magnificient - worth taking a couple of boat trips along some of the rivers and canals. You have the opportunity to see pandas in something closer to their natural habitat than you will get in a zoo. You'll find lovely artwork and wonderful musicians in so many unexpected places. The food is great, as long as you avoid the big tour groups that herd you into endless buffet-style places that serve what they think Westerners want to eat.

So much to do, so much to see...you won't manage it all in one trip.

You can not appreciate China unless you penetrate yourself into this Ancient fabulous country .
The western are not going to understand it forever.
There is a lot of misunderstanding between the west and the east.
It is a developing country , the value of people are still developing, they are in the same road as the one which the US have passed 30 to 50 years ago.
There are a lot of people there, which means a lot of oppotunity and competition.
Everybody are working hard to try to build a better life for themselves and their children.
The culture is largely influenced or demaged by western .
The only original chinese culture survives at the remote countryside where there are very few people know.
It is a very diverse and vast country.
People from the north can not understand the Chinese spoken by people from the south. the west also do not understand the east.
the food they eat daily varies from province to province.
there are 56 different ethnic groups. They also speak , wear , behave differently.
Most chinese hate Janpanese and a lot of them , especially eldly people still do not like US .
You have to feel it by yourself.

Have you ever seen a sunset? What's it like?

China is so diverse it defies explanation. It is political. It is rural. It is Dynamic. It is Cultural.

It's Ancient with culture non-Chinese don't understand.

The Chinese word for Cat sounds like Mao. Slightly different than Meow. The word for longevity also sounds like Mao.

In the West we say a cat has nine lives. That's longevity.

The main drive of Chinese is survival of self and family. That probably came about because they had to really concentrate on finding survival in a land with more people than opportunity.

They value education and force it on their children in realization education is opportunity.

It is a wonderful country full of wonderful people trying to make their life better and willing to sacrifice to achieve it.
