he's only a year old...and my boyfriend and I just moved into this neighborhood in the fall.. and I am afraid because everytime we take him outside on put him on his chain and leave him alone he barks and barks and barks at everything and then at nothing at all.. he just barks but when someone is around he isn't that hyper..WHY does he bark so much? will it change as he gets older?

(we've got 2 dogs btw) and if the other dog isn't with him either he just goes nuts..I know cockers are known for being "sketchy & jittery" but Cole he's too much so..I give them both all the attention they could ever want..yet he's still barking I read somewhere it could be fear but I am not sure?

He knows that's his job. He's just taking it a bit too far. You need to let him bark like 3 times and then have a stern voice when you say, NOooo Ralph (or whatever) Dogs desperately want to please their owners but you have to get a bit rough with your voice and if a month goes by and nothing changes, then you have to get out the folded newspaper. Yes, the newspaper. For 2 reasons: It won't really hurt to whack him and because they are afraid of the sound. You can use this technique indoors too. He has to mind you everywhere, no? If you do nothing I guarantee your neighbors will hate you and your dog. He will do nothing but become more agressive and you stand much less of a chance to do anything about it. People don't like unruly kids and they don't like obnoxious dogs! Be stern!

Does he bark in the house? If not, he doesn't like being separated from his family. And no, this does not change with age.

the dog probably just doesn't want to be alone in a new place.

he may not feel comfortable being alone because you just moved, he isn't familiar, nor is he sure what will happen when he's alone.

you should stay with him until he is more familiar with his new home.
he'll grow out of it, he's only nervous.

cocker spaniels are nervous dogs.

I think the dog is lonely, and just wants company.
