Ooh I know this one - it's to do with their wild ancestry. Wild dogs - and cats, and many other four-leggeds, walk round and round on the spot to flatten whatever plants they're about to bed down on. It's such a habit it's actually in their genes now, which is why you'll see a dog or cat circle round and round even when there's nothing to flatten - they can't help themselves! Cute.

They do this to flatten an area to make a bed. This is also a part of a process known as nesting, where the dog arranges the area as he likes it before going to sleep.

It is an instinct behavior for mashing down grasses before lying down. Most dogs do it. Although domestic now this behavior is still displayed.

in the wild they do it so they can make sure they dont lay down on something sharp. They just have an instinct to do that when they live with you.

It doesn't matter - it's a dog and dogs are wonderful. Let it do whatever the heck it wants to.......it loves you unconditionally and you should do the same. Wish I had a dog again.

not all dogs do, just mostly German shepard type dogs. Guess they don't want to lay in poop so they look around to make sure there is no poop

It is called nesting. They are making sure their pups will be comfortable, and that there are no predators. Seriously!
