Yes. Four beers every night is very extreme. And you really hit the nail on the head when you said he (she) is not able to go a night without a beer. That means this person is an alchoholic. This will lead to liver damage and an early death. He will deny that he's an alchoholic, so challenge him to go a night without a beer. If he can't, he needs help. Getting him the help he needs is the best and most loving thing you could do.

any amount is suspect if the person it not able to go without for one night!
I know that if I just have a half pint it has an effect on driving .. I might be inclined to overtake someone where I normally wouldn't, but at a half pint the difference is quite small. Small or not its obviously having an effect.
four beers sounds on the high side to me for every night .. but there are a lot of guys who would drink at that level and not consider it a problem. for me four pints would be drunk. but even if just "bussed" it will have an effect on how this person interacts with other people.
if you are in close relationship ... it doesn't matter if any objective measure says its high or ok. If it doesn't work for you just step away.

One half to a full drink is the "healthy" norm for American woman and one to two drinks is the recommened for men. A drink is 1.5 ounces of hard liquer, 8 ounces of wine or 12 ounces of beer. So four beers every night is not nomally healthy. That being said it takes one and half hours for a person to motablize one drink, so if your friend is drinking one beer every one to two hours then yes they are "within toloerances. Is this enough to call them a "drunk" or acoholic, it depends on a lot of things, including weather or not the "I can quit at any time" phrase has been mentioned.
Perhapes is you mention that they are going over the RDA and could be causeing damage to themselves, they might cut back. I'm not really sure as I have never staged an intervention for any of my over drinking family, I have stopped and cut back on the booze myself, and it generaly takes some sort of "ah ha" moment, like dirving 30 miles and not remembering doing it.

No, that's not normal. It's possible to go days, weeks, and even years without drinking alcohol.
I'd hazard to say that a huge majority of the population goes a long time without drinking, much less drinking four beers a day.

four beers is enough to impair someone. people try and seem cool or something saying that they are only buzzed but technically buzzed means a little drunk doesn't it?
If he can't go a night without drinking than he's addicted. that makes him an alcoholic.
I've heard of much worse cases of alcoholism to be sure, but he's still putting his liver and general health at risk.

there is a difference if this person is drinking alone, or with otehr people like at a party or something. If hes like at a party, doing it for fun, thats not that bad, but not like EVERY day. if this person is alone, and drinking, then thats kind of weird, maybe extreme and a little overboard. if its something new, then maybe it will pass. but if this is a consistent thing, then my opinion is, its not normal.
and i dont think its normal. is it that he HAS to drink, or for fun. becuase if he cant go one night , w/o alcohol...... then

The acceptable number is actually two (2) at a maximum. Otherwise, he will be viewed as an addicted, piglike, wasted (even if he's not drunk) man.

I wouldn't consider it normal...continuous drinking stuffs up your liver. Drinking 4 pints now and again is fine, but not every night...but that's just my opinion lol.
