Well, they don't pay taxes. Also, there is little accountabilty in non profit organizations. Churches build up there wealth so they have power over others. God knows they don't have real spiritual power. With real spiritual power, you don't need money. Spirit doesn't need money. The flesh does. Churches should spend all thier time working on the spirit. If they did so, the flesh and the human condition would take care of itself.

"If anyone advocates a different doctrine, and does not agree with the sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, he is conceited and understands nothing; but has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.
But godliness is a means of great gain, when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world so we cannot take anything out of it either." (I Timothy 6:3-7)

Lots and lots of devoted believers, if you play your cards right. It's in the nature of organised religion that it quickly becomes an important part of a believer's life; sometimes their defining characteristic, because only religion claims to offer Absolute Truth. When people are so devoted to their religion, they will give to support the clergy. When you have the rich and powerful in your religion, then an entire class of wealthy clergy swiftly follows.
