For a long while it was believed that the algae in the Oceans produce most of the oxygen in the world. So there were scientists devoted in studying algae for space travel(to change the CO2 into oxygen.

There are some people who believe any houseplant will reduce some of the room pollution. It may be true but basically if you have a window that allows ventillation you are unlikely to notice any difference in pollution.

Adding more plants might increase humidity in a room and the appearance of plants may make the room more presentable or hospitable. Even those attributes may be harder to qualify. However if there is not enought quality light in a room a houseplant cannot produce oxygen but contribute more CO2!

The plant that absorbs the most pollution and gives out the most oxygen is the pussywillow. It emanates carbon monoxide and ozone which depletes the ozone layer and has led to a significant hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica. It also gives out the most oxygen due to its enormous consumption of CO2. However, it's release of toxic and radioactive plutonium ions creates an environmental disaster waiting to happen. Hope this helps!!!
