To the jewish people geneology was very important. You are who your ancesters are. The geneology is recorded from your father, saying that, it was less important who you mother was as to who your father was. The head of the tribes were men and you were a member of a certain tribe through your father. This is why men are more prominant in the boof of Genesis.
