Is it true that passing the swimming test isn't really mandatory? Is he likely to get recycled? If he will get recycled, will we be notified by phone or mail?

The Navy boot camp has classes for NQS (non-qualified swimmers). He will either pass this class or be held over at boot camp until he does. The class is a basic skills class, and is not that difficult, even for a non-swimmer. Yes, this a mandatory requirement. I know several people, including myself, that had to pass this.

Shelly it's hard to believe that there would be a squid that cannot swim!!! Just kidding, I don't know but I would think that it would be imperative that a sailor should be able to swim. I was in the Marines and we too had to pass a swim test but I don't remember that anyone was re-cycled due to not passing the test. This may surprise you but this Jarhead spent more time at sea then many Sailors do in their tour of duty. Best of luck to your Hubby !!!!

When i went to navy boot camp, i didn't pass the first time so they just take the people who didn't pass aside and practice with them that way and then they get qualifed as class c swimmer. The main thing is jumping off the really really tall diving board. If he refuses to do that than i'm not sure what they will do. Jumping off is easy and they got lifeguards there. If thats the issue than tell him not to worry. I'm not good swimmer and i was able to jump it.

If he's going into the Navy it might be wise to know how to swim. Last week a sailor fell off a ship and rescuers responded immediately but the guy drowned because he didn't know how to swim. It doesn't take that long to learn.

they will give him plenty of opportunities to pass, If he continues to fail, yes he will be recycled. You may or may not be informed.. they might let him call home, they might not.

passing ALL aspects of Boot Camp is mandatory.

unless it has changed since i joined 17 years ago, your husband will be a fixture at bootcamp until he passes the basic swimming course.

If he doesn't make it, tell him to E-mail me. I am an Army recruiter, and you don't have to swim to pass our Basic.
