saltine - a cracker sprinkled with salt before baking

I think it is the recipie and the delicious salt crystals that are on one side of the cracker. Ritz crackers are buttery. However, saltines never seem to fill you up. Oh yeh, they are square shaped too.

There are many different types of "crackers" or firm, baked flour-based breads. Saltines have salt crystals on their surface.

before baking the cracker is sprinkled with crystalized salt.. unlike some crackers where the salt is disolved into the dough..

They're also called "soda" crackers because they are made with baking soda and not baking powder.
