I'm attending a friend's Hindu engagement ceremony soon (I'm American). What should I expect, wear, bring as a gift? Thanks.

It said on the invitation "no boxed gifts". What would be an appropriate gift?

There is no reason to buy an Indian Lengha, Salawaar Kameez or Sari ( I don't reccomend a Sari b/c it's not easy to walk in nor is it easy to wrap) just for one day out of your life. You can wear a nice dress. Most of the Indo-american women wear exactly the same. The key to fitting into Indian weddings is that all the ladies wear bright and festive colors. So if you got a really pretty blouse and long skirt with a matching shawl....it can pass as a Indian Lengha.
If you DO want a Indian outfit I suggest you go to websites like: Kaneehsa.com or fashionsera.com or meenalsindianfashions.com or indiamart.com or SeasonsIndia.com or eshakti.com. Most of these places would custom fit to your measurements. Depending on the area that you live in there are some Indian/pakistani "towns" and there are a lot of stores to try on the outfits. check out suleka.com to see where the nearest store is near you.
"no boxed gifts" generally means they want cash only gifts.

Engagement ('Misri', the Ring Ceremony) - this event is held to exchange the gold wedding rings. The couple welcome each other with garlands and sweets are exchanged between the two families. The engagement is often completed a dinner party for friends and relatives. Among Gujarati families the bride's family presents the 'Matli', which consists of significant quantities savoury snacks and Indian sweets, to the groom's.

Ask your friend what she wants. Maybe you can give her the gift before the party and then you wont feel so awquard at the party. Either way, I'm sure they will understand that not everyone is familiar with their traditions.
As for the Boxed Gifts, I have no clue what they mean by that.

Well usually indians what they used to wear is if you go to a indian shop they will be selling jippa it is one of indian outfit with dhooti comes toghether or they will sell in a set whereby with the pants just tell them the size of your shirt and pants. Speaking of the gift well you can try to bring something unique it really doesn't matter any way......
