The best one I've heard is to think about water, or more specifically, H2O. It has 3 different forms, the gaseous water vapor, the liquid water, and the solid ice. Vapor, water, and ice are all the same thing just in different forms. Same kind of thing for the Holy Trinity: God, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Ghost.

There are none. This "water, ice, steam" thing that some people want to liken it to is a heresy and dinigrates the tremendous forces at work within the Godhead Trinity. The Bible says that it is a mystery but the best any believer can explain is this way: God is a trinity and we too are a trinity (body, soul and spirit) and each has a function. The Holy Trinity has God the Father as the creative mind; Jesus as the embodied son who obeys the Father's will then the Holy Spirit which is the power that God sends wherever He wants it sent. Believers have the Holy Spirit indwelling within their spirit which is how the Father and the son communicate with us. The Holy Spirit gives us the discernment to understand the Bible for instance which many call follishness, or just stories, etc (and you can find this statement in 1Corinthians, I believe). That's why believers seem to non-believers so irritatingly assured that they have the one truth and will not be shaken from it. Once wisdon has passed the intellect and the psyche (soul) and penetrated the spirit it's like a lightbulb suddenly coming on. The truth given to you on that level remains without any doubt whatsoever from the intellect or the emotions - psyche - soul.
Lastly, as Paul said, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God". He's a good reference when there's something you want to understand.

Genesis gives the best as it is the true microcosm of the trinity. It is that man was created in the image of God Genesis chapter two shows that Adam was formed from the dust and into him God breathed the spirit and the two became a living soul.

All metaphors have their limitations, but how about this one:

me as father
me as husband
me as friend

- I am always the same.
- I interact in relationship in different ways.
- I am understood and related to differently, depending on your understanding of our relationship.
- Whatever our relationship, I want it to be one in which you understand me more deeply than the label you've given me.

When St. Patrick tried to convert his fellow Irishmen to Catholicism, he used the analogy of the shamrock, since it has three leaves. The native Irish accepted this idea, since they were used to the idea of multiple deities.
