I live in the country. They lady across from me has many trees. Over the years more and more of these loud obnocous and messy birds have taken over her trees. Now the neighbors want to kill them to get rid of them. They seem to keep coming back year after year. I try to get them to knock down the old nests (in the winter) as I see hundreds of them in the trees. Their only idea is to shoot them. Now, in the spring I know the nests are full of eggs and babies. There has to be a better way than killing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please only answer if you think you can help. I think they call t hese birds Kackles. They are very large, and loud and irritating. I wish they were gone too, but I don't beleive in killing innocent creatures.

Most birds are afraid of owls. You might want to try getting fake owls at garden shops. Try to tie them to a branch in some trees to make sure they stay put so they can try to scare away the birds in the trees. Depending on how large they are, see if you can get plastic hawks too. Hope this helps! Good luck, my parents have the same problem.

Do you mean Grackles? If you live in the US, it would be illegal for you to disturb, move, or destroy their nests. It is also illegal to kill the birds as well. Both will get you fined and even may land you in jail if you are reported. It does nothing to remove their nests in the winter, they will just rebuild new ones. It is breeding season so you may just have to deal with it until the end of spring and mating season is over. I am surprised someone who dislikes animals and nature would decide to live in the country. Maybe you and your neighbors should take up bird watching and enjoy watching them feeding and raising their babies. Many people are not so lucky.

I think you must mean Grackles.
I have some Great Tailed Grackles living in one of my pine trees. They are cool birds and defend their territory ferociously. I've seen them attack cats and even large dogs.
One even took a dive at me once, but retreated when I turned and faced it.
I have heard that a fake owl will scare them away, but I'm not sure thats true.

oh dear...i dont think that there is a simple solution. if the trees remain..the birds will keep returning and if the nests are removed - they will re-build. shooting is a terrible way to deal with the problem...have you asked for advice from the local council...maybe they can help? personally...i would rather lose the trees...i hate the thought of killing something that is just doing what nature has taught it...hope you get it sorted though...its a real racket they make isnt it!!

find yourself a falconer with a sparrow hawk or coopers hawk with licence to take black birds. let the hawk kill one or two and let the falconer continue to fly the hawk in that area. the birds will soon disperse.
