You can send him anything you want, but if they dont approve of it he wont get it. Dont send any kind of food, thats just a set up for humiliation, we had a guy who's mom sent him a box of cookies so him and his battle buddy(both their names where Hall, but one was black and the other was white) had to eat them ALL in front of us while we where in push up position. And to make it funny, after they shoved them all in their mouths, black Hall asked for some milk! Well that made them their nicknames, Milk and Cookies. Ok enough of story time, I recommend sending him pictures of you and stuff at home. I loved that stuff!

Don't send him food.
Don't send him care packages.
Don't send him anything but normal letters, with NO writing other than what was needed.
Don't perfume the envelope.
All these things call out attention to him from his "Drill Instructors" or whatever the Army calls them (I was USMC).
Pictures are cool (keep them G-Rated, they may end up on a Board).
Cards are cool - particularly funny ones. (NO MUSICAL ONES!!) Try: http://www.cards4heroes.com/
Keep the conversation light and supportive. He doesn't need anymore stress than what he already has.
Write often, at least once a week, even if you don't hear from him. (he is REALLY busy)
Number your letters on the inside so he knows what order they are in...sometimes letters get shuffled and can get confusing.
REMEMBER: KEEP IT SUPPORTIVE!!!! You ARE the life line, honey!
Good Luck and God speed!!!!!!!!

No alcoholic beverages. Although you *can* send him cookies and things of that nature, it would be ill advised since he would likely not get to eat them anyway. Unless basic training has softened considerably in the past 25 years, trainees eat their 3 squares and whatever their training staff allows them to get from the roach coach on occasion.
A good idea for something to send would be stamps and writing materials since you don't know how often he would be able to purchase those on his own. trips to the PX are few and far inbetween during basic due to a rigorous schedule.

You can't send porn, alcohol, etc. Snacks and things are o.k., but they he may not get it. Or, he might be forced to eat it all in two minutes. Either way, your best bet is to stick with letters and cards. I was there 5 years ago doing the same thing your fiance is doing. Good luck to him and you.
