I am an orthodontic assistant for 11 years now. It is a Herbst appliance. It doesn't really make the teeth sore but it does make the jaw sore for about a week.
Regular over the counter pain relievers (advil, tylenol etc..) as well as alternating warm and cold compresses help the transition period. You will do great!!! Good luck!

Oh I had that you'll get used to it after a while I know you hate it put most people won't even notice you have it. The bars might get in the way sometime like eating a sandwhich but really they aren't that bad after the first week you can do it. The worst part is getting the whole aplience in then your good to go. Take one or two advils befroe you go and that will ease the pain. But it really isn't that bad I should know I got it in two days before my birthday. you'll be ok.
