He is very protective over shoes if he finds one he likes he would sit by it for hours, he would also become ill tempered and bite me if I try to take him away from his shoe.Know why?Please help.

I have cockatiels (2) and notice that they are curious of dark places. Whenever they see a crack in a book shelf, a closet door only partly opened, a dark shoe box, they want to know more. Shoes have dark holes, and also ..lots of detail. they like the shoe laces and different fabric textures.

Some birds have a thing for certain objects, if you will.
My mother raised a pigeon when she was a little girl and he had the same fetish, but instead of getting ill tempered he would hump the shoe and stay there.

Sounds like he has adopted the shoe as a surrogate mate.
