What is the proper etiquette? It's hard to do. I've seen people using chopsticks and eating it with their fingers in restaurants.

When I was a child my family bought organically raised canned ones .... they were far better than the little yellow ones.... the way people are eating them in the Japanese restaurants is from the pod .... but you just pop them out of the pod and directly into your mouth .... there is no set rule and no one is going to be unpleasant with you .... it is not stylized and formal like the Japanese tea ceremony ..(eating "it" ... meaning some people eat the whole thing, pod and all?)

I have seen illustrations online.... altho' I do not find any at the moment ...

I think everybody just uses fingers. But if you want to use chopsticks, hold the edamame on one side and eat the inside beans using your mouth.

you can, but you dont have to. Edamame is just a fresh soybean. Eat it however you feel comfortable. Its one of those foods, like fries, that is socially acceptable to be eaten with your fingers-the original chopsticks, lol
