War is something that is always going to be around why do people still cry about this? There is no such thing as having a war free world. I dont know if being a soldier will make my answer a little biased but here it is. The military men and women in Iraq are there, regardless of if you want them there or not and alot of them need new gear, they need bullets to stay alive, they need better food. Dont punish them for choices senior leadership made. The problem I have is the way the government spends money on useless things stateside. Who needs a nice big red motorpool with fancy cranes when we were fine with what we had before, but we have new guys showing up to units that are not given housing for thier families because the post is too full.

I'll even make your point for you. War is the most comsumptive, expensive, ruinous and fruitless excercise man is capable of. The US doesn't fight war on the cheap, so every shooter in theater is carrying at least fifteen thousand dollars worth of weapons and gear on their person at any given time, and that's without the pricey night vision goggles or high-end communications equipment. Every Hellfire missile that flies off the rails of a Predator drone costs us over $150,000, and the Predator costs over a thousand dollars an hour to fly and maintain, because of operator/maintenance pay, spares and life cycle costs. A jet attack aircraft? Forget it. Even in peace time, an American carrier battle group costs over a million dollars a day to operate, due to pay and bennies, consumables and bunker/jet fuel. I'm sure some of you have heard the numbers, but I'll gloss over them; the US Defense Department now has a budget that's larger than the rest of the world's military budgets combined. An active shooting war on several fronts will do that. Could we use much of this to better the United States in other ways, ways that will better ensure the future of this country with the proper education of it's students and better provision for it's needy? Sure. We don't need many of the newer and kewler toys that we're buying right now, at least IMHO. But spending no money on our warmaking ability at all? Can you realistically imagine a world without war? People lose their composure after being struck by a natural disaster that they were told about in advance. People turn on each other when the normal services (water, power) are taken away for a few days. Much of the world in which we live is riven with internecine tribal fighting, thuggery, piracy and kidnapping as a growth industry. Dealing with humanity without taking into account our tendency towards violence is like ignoring our tendency to clump together in like-minded groups, or our need for hierarchy. We do what we do because we are who we are.

The points of war can vary, however the government funds many useless programs (called pork belly spending) that could be used to fund programs that would help more people. Write your congressman to let them know what programs you think should recieve more funding and why. You will receive an answer (if you mail it snail mail). You can also make more people in your community aware of programs you think we should be doing.
I am a military wife, and I would love a world with no wars, but it is not going to happen , at least anytime soon unfortunatly.

Since now that you've mentioned it, I have also been thinking about another question, that is also in the same light as yours: What's the use of spending millions and billions for the defense budget when the money can be used for other things beneficial to that country, such as elevate the living of the poor, better infrastructure, etc.?
War is meaningless, and those who provoke war and create a situation where war can only be the outcome are stupid people.

War is just a term for killing each other because of a disput sometimes. When one place has a problem with another and will not stop until it goes away it risks lifes and money so that they can have a peaceful life...but that doesnt always work out the way they plan

Bush and team are war profiteers,, they can buy anything they want,, the Attorney General,,, the department of justice,, defense,, Secretary of State,, they all serve at the pleasure of the president,, like Pastor Ted did,,, before the presidents spiritual council,,, was caught buying meth and having an affair with a male prostitute,, he was having a real good time,,, do you think he is lonely now,,, or just forced to pray with Laura and Barney.

Why don't you go ask the radical Islamics and see what they say. We are over there to keep them from murdering innocent civilians. Do you need a better excuse?
