Why can't we as people do good because its the right thing to do and not because we are expecting a reward in the afterlife?

It would seem that we should be able to do good not matter what but the Bible says that no one is good, when Eve and Adam disobeyed God and ate of the fruit from the tree of knowledge then their eyes were opened - opened and opened that what they had done was disobedient. We have been a disobedient society since that time. This is why God sent his only son to take on the sins of the world and to be cruicified. We all should want to be good and I think most people are but their are still a few that could care less about others. If we discipline ourselves we can do good and also some people just have a heart for wanting to do good and in helping others. I don't help someone because of rewards, I try to help people because it's in my heart to do so. Missions is what I love most and I get frustrated because I can't do more than I do but I know when God opens the door for me to do something and when he does, you better believe that is what I do. Everyone should want do to good, rewards or not but it just isn't like that in a world full of sinful people - remember also that there are those who do good but don't believe in God or an afterlife so there are good people reguardless of their religious belief .

you can be the best person in the world but you will not inherit the kingdom of Heaven without being saved. your works will not get you to Heaven....
if we are saved (I am) then my good works come natural because my heart is full of love, compassion and I do Gods work. The rewards i will receive in Heaven will be great and how do I know this? Because God promised that to me

some people do things because they are the right thing to do, you cant do it without the help of God thought because we are all made sinners.
Turn away from temptation and temptation will leave you.
But hey eternity in paradise isnt so bad of a reward I dont think.

well nobody is perfect.So we can't really do anything right.like for example:
You go to a popular person's b-day party.you think it was right to give her/him the present and join them.but u went and ignorred your best friends b-day party and didn't get them a present or comfort just a few words:HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
you thought going to the party was right but you went to the person that you didn't know that well and was rich and got more money.you wanted to be popular and risked your friendship.
see?no one is perfect or does anything perfect.there are 2 sides or everything.the good side and bad side

No one is good but God whose righteousness is absolute. We who love the truth follow him not to receive a reward but because he is the truth and that truth does change us and we do receive salvation through the atonement he provided

people should be good no matter what, and the after life is just a bonus for those faithful to the Word.

We should all strive to do good whether we are rewarded for it or not. You know, "Treat other as you want others to treat you".

a totally agree with you.. but i think the answer to this is becuase we are humans..
and there is alot of people that dont believe in an after life..
