I really hate it when they have one size cereal on sale, but they put the sale ticket under the larger size so you grab the larger size. Unless you watch every single item at checkout--which is next to impossible with five children in tow--you miss out on the savings PLUS pay the higher price for the bigger box!! Also, to really save money at the store, I always use manufacturer's coupons, and our stores double them all the way up to 1.00, so when certain items go on sale, I REALLY rake in the savings--I have even BEEN PAID to take groceries home--I LOVE THAT!! :)

I don't think i've ever been scammed at a grocery store. But for savings, clip coupons and watch the ads for weekly store sales. Safeway often has buy one get one free with top quality items and their safeway brand is just as good as or better than many more expensive brands. Often if a store has a sale like, 3 for $6, you don't have to buy all three to get the savings. Every store is different though, so ask before assuming that one or you may end up paying full price for one of something when you can get two or three for much cheaper.

Divide grocery money into equal weekly amounts. Try not to "borrow" from next week's allowance. This way money should last all month.
Watch for store newspaper ads and coupons and shop sales. Take advantage of coupons and sale items, but be sure your family will use a "bargain." If they won't it's no saving. Don't clip a coupon unless it's for a product you would normally use.
Plan ahead. Plan ahead for the main foods you will cook for the next several days. Make a menu on your calander and buy only ingredients you need. Are there items on sale this week that you can use? Check how much storage space you have for groceries.
Do most of your shopping only once a week or twice a month. You will save time and not spend as much money on "extras" you see as you shop.
Make a list and stick to it. Don't be tempted to buy things you haven't planned on getting, unless you find less expensive substitutes for items on your list.
Shop by yourself. Go without your friends, then you won't be led astray by anything they buy. If possible, don't take children with you.
Go when you aren't hungry. Shop on a full stomach or else everything will look inviting.
Compare brands. Look at the cost and the quantity. Usually the stores own brand is cheaper, but not always.
Compare different stores. Look at prices in several stores if you have a choice. If you find one store is generally less expensive, stick with it.
Compare forms of food. Buy a lower-cost form of the product if it will do as well.
Canned tomato pieces rather than whole tomatoes.
"Day-old bread, if it is to be eaten soon.
Take time to compare frozen, fresh and canned products.
Utilize your leftovers, that means plan them into your menu. Say you bought a whole ham but, you know you won't use all of it for one meal. Slice the leftovers or dice them and besure to use that hambone for a delicious soup.
This is how I did it when raising my family and compared to my friends I spent 1/3 of the money they did on grocerys. I only shopped every other week. During one week I bought just meat & produce. The other was for staples, cleaning and household needs an toiletries.

There are a lot of buy one get one free adds. You can go to the store and get a pack of pork chops for 6 bucks any given day, when they have a buy one get one that 6 buck pack of pork goes up to 9 bucks.
I am a great shopper though, or think I am. I check all the flyer's of the local stores and get what I need at the one that has the sale. Will also stock up , if my 5.99 laundry soap is on sale for 4.99 I will buy 3 to last me the month. I also use coupons, sign up for the discount cards etc. Rule of thumb, if it is not a food product and it is not on sale, don't buy it.

One large chain in the north east advertizes a sale price but the price is not programed into the registers. so you pay full price. I save money by shopping in bulk or at stores that sell in bulk. that means you have to get the prroduct out of the barrel and put in plastic bag your self.

I have a friend who is the queen of coupons and all that fun stuff. She recently bought $300+ worth of groceries, paying only $1 and change.

I have purchased chicken that had extra pieces of fat hidden under the meat causing it to weigh more. Or water added to frozen meats bringing up the weight.
