I'm not going to get another parakeet, because then she will bond with it and not with me. They sell these plastic birds at the pet store, would that keep her company while I'm at work? Or would she bond with that as well?

I don't know...she might look at it as a toy but if you're concerned with the bonding I wouldn't risk it. Instead of that, I'd get some fun toys for her. A millet holder with lots of fun millet, some shreddable toys, a swing, maybe a little music box on a chain...lots of stuff to do. Our cockatiel cage is chock full of toys. She's got a long acrylic toy that spells out the word SPOILED, a toy that looks like wrapped candy, balsa wood sticks on a long chain (she LOVES that one), a swing, millet holders, a cardboard ring toy...that sort of stuff.

I'd also maybe leave a radio on for her or the tv so she has something that will keep her attention during the day.

I gave my parakeet a plastic bird too, and then it started bonding with it instead of me. Get a mirror and take it out when you get home from work.

No. Also, no mirrors. If you want to get her something, lots and lots of toys, and rotate them often. Parakeets (Budgies) are not the most affectionate birds around, so you really do have your work cut out for you if you want a companion bird. If you're worried that maybe she's afraid, try a Happy Hut. It's a little fleece pouch, and she can climb into it and hide. PetSmart should carry them.

I have a parakeet of my own and I had the same thought. I tried mirrors in the cage and she loved them! She will whistle at herself but when I want her to come out she does so willingly. Try mirrors, they also keep the bird entertained.

you should not get your parakeet something too plastic or it will pick it,i tried something really cool. Here is what to do:

1. get a toilet paper roll
2.cover it in double sided tape.
3.roll it around in food.(the food should stick)
4.hang or lay at the bottom of the cage.
5.Watch your bird have a fiesta.
