Someone should teach these kids some manners!. The proper response to what your mom did was not to treat her like a waitress, but to send HER a nice thank you card and perhaps a thoughtful gift. I do not think she needs to respond at all to this insult.

Interesting question... if she was cooking in her home and the kids were her guests... like one of her own kids was graduating and the others were friends of her child.. it's actually an insult for them to have left a tip for their hostess! But.. kids don't know any better.. no point in getting upset about it...
If she was being paid to cater the dinner then the tip was appropriate.. perhaps a bit cheap actually :)
Either way $20 split up among a group isn't going to go far... I'd say she should keep it and put it towards going out herself :) But if she really wants to give it back... invite the kids back to show her their prom pics.. and use the $20 to buy some pop and snacks for them.

Sending a thank you to them would be nice, but she should keep the money. The kids all pitched in and wanted her to have this, and I think it would be tacky to give back the tip they gave her. If she feels odd keeping it, then she should use it to buy each of them a graduation gift or something like that.

Is there one "kid" she knows well? I ask this because, she can send a card (thank you) and give it to the one kid she knows.
In the card she can say "thank you for the 'tip.' It was very kind of you to do this. I had fun (or, it was my pleasure) to prepare the meal for you all. I am returning the money so you can spend it on your own fun. Thanks for the thought!"
If she doesn't think that is right and proper, send a thank you card with a nice message. She can keep the $20 and maybe use it on the kids at another opportunity. (graduation gifts maybe?)

She should keep the money. She did something nice for those kids, and they wanted to thank her by giving her the tip. It would probably have been better if they'd sent her flowers instead, but they didn't.
If she returns the money, she will only make the kids feel bad about it. It would be like refusing their thanks.
If she is really uncomfortable keeping the money, she should donate it.

Keep the money and just keep doing the great things she does. I think it was great of the kids to leave her a tip. Shows real appreciation for what she did.

I'd say money is earned, her motives may have been altruistic but prom kids are the pickiest creatures on Earth and if she did well enough to warrant a tip. Treat yourself with your gains or risk insulting the intent of those who thought you worthy of the gratuity.

She probably took pictures. The girls would love to have the pic in a cute frame to remember the night. As for the guys, I'm not sure what they would like. That would be a good thank ou though.

Use the money to do something for them. That way the money is basically going to them anyway, they are being thanked extra, and there are no issues from giving it back to them.
