X reg or W reg just refers to when the vehicle was first registered with DVLA for use on the road.
X reg = March to August 2000
W Reg = September 2000 to February 2001

Sorry but you are all nearly right. W plate was March 1st through to and including 31st August 2000 and X plate ran 1st September through to and including 28th of Feb 2001.

Ignore the registration letter unless there was a model change and the X reg has now been replaced by a newer model. Always go for the lowest mileage.
