Well, that depends on where you are at. What are the code requirements, the lifting requirements, and the purpose of the elevator? For example, a standard passenger elevator that must be able to accommodate a stretcher (figure 2500 lbs capacity, telescoping) would have rough interior dimensions of 51" x 80". However, if you are talking a freight elevator for a high rise hotel, those can be 144"x144" or larger.

It all depends on the intended use of the elevator.

Average is 5 inches long. I don't know about width, but mine is like an inch and a half. Just my personal experience lol.
