Hmm, I would say anything that is low on the food chain and matures quickly - mushrooms, seafood, and plants like soybeans (although not necessarily "alternative"). Methods of growing our crops in a different fashion include hydroponic plant growth, which requires no soil and can be done indoors with UV grow-lights.
