I've always been an average student - I work hard to get above average grades... some guys I know take the easy way out - copying during exams, bringing in microfilms, getting others to write their papers for them etc... I end up in a place expected due to my average scores whereas these characters reach good colleges, cheat their way thru college, through recruitment tests, scrape through the interviews, cheat during exams in training (one guy actually got some award for the best scores during training) and live happily ever after...
The same thing happens in grad school - my scores on assignments always hover around 90% and that's just the class average. So I asked a guy how he managed to score 100% so consistently and he replies that the assignments are repeated every semester, just copy!
So my question is, am I a fool to believe in hard work and doing everything on my own? Guys who party their way through grad school are doing better than I am! What is this world coming to?

I hope I'm not bursting any bubbles by telling you this......but.... there is no more or less "academic integrity" now than there has ever been! If you think about, the idea that human nature is any different now than it was in the 1950's or 60s or last year or ten minutes ago is absurd!
Hard work almost always builds character, but it no more guarantees success than cheating does!
You should do the right thing to preserve your own pride, not 'earn' some kind of reward... if you do it for the reward you are showing precisely the same motivation as someone who cheats!

Will it depends on the institution.
Obviously the one he went to is not as good as it claims.
People who copy all the time eventually get caught most of the time. The higher you go the harder it is to get away with cheating.
He may get by, but probably his charma will catch up with him.
I suppose if you really resentful, you can always secretly report him.
About you? Well, I guess you got to look at your abilities and you dedication, and your other options. Mabye you are in the wrong field? Mabye you are using the wrong approaches.
Sadly, not everybody can be successful tho.
