My dog is terrified of thunder. It has just gotten worse. I have tired a sedative from the vet, and it did nothing. He is normally a high strung dog, and now terrified of storms. It is so bad that my husband is ready to have him put to sleep. Is there any sedative that you can make for dogs???

Benadryl will work and is safe to use

No, there is nothing you can make at home. Talk to your vet, there are several sedatives for use in dogs, yours just may need something stronger than the average on prescribed for most dogs.

Warning about benadryl, its safe to use in dogs but it does not typically have the sedative type effect in dogs that it does in people, and often times actually causes some dogs to become more hyper. It works great for allergies, but is not usually used for a sedative in dogs because of the unpredictabe results.

There are medications but under no circumstance can you "make" one yourself. Wait for the vet to open and be patient with the dog. You can try giving a dose of bendryl according to weight but alcohol is strictly off limits because dogs can not metabolise alcohol.

You should also try to find a dog that is completely confident around storms and have them play through a few storms. That will teach the dog that nothing is truly frightening about storms.

NO! If she's used to having the radio on, put it on and try to block out the sound. Distract her any way you can. Play fetch or whatever she likes to do.

Some Bach Flower rescue remedy rubbed on her ears might help, you should be able to get it at health food stores, you can put a little in her water too, ask for dosage for the weight of your dog when you buy it.

Noise Desensitization:Exposing your dog to different loud noises, and always making sure something good happens, can help to reduce the dogUs sensitivity to loud noises. You can play tapes of storms, starting at a low volume and working up to very high volume, and stroke, play with, and teach the dog to ignore the sound.

Some gentle training to increase her confidence would help too. Also stay calm with her and try to reassure her, if she's trying to hide, let her go where she wants to if possible or create a space such as a crate covered with a blanket to go in.

This sounds strange but lots of folks swear by it - Put a t-shirt on him. His head out the neck hole & step his front feet through the arm holes, tie the trailing end up in a snug knot. Many dogs find the resulting whole body hug reasurring.
I spoke to one owner whos dog then actually wouldnt let anyone take it off for HOURS after the storm.....

I find that playing one of their favourite games is often the best distraction for them...My pup is also afraid of thunder and when it's stormy outside I get her toys and play fetch until she is tired and then I will put the radio on and snuggle up till she falls asleep.

put music up loud or the tv.. try distracting him with games,, do not pet him ( that would be construed as praise for acting scared) keep him on a leash ,, watch loud tv and ignore him... perhaps you could FIND HIM A NEW HOME.. never heard of someone wanting to kill an animal because it was afraid........ hope you dont have children,, what happens if they get scared too...
