The Glock Model 22 in .40 S&W caliber is the standard sidearm of many local, state and federal agencies here in the U.S. It has for the most part replaced the old S&W Model 10 revolver in .38 special. I have nothing but good things to say about this gun. The only other gun I like better than this one is the Colt MK IV Series 70 Government Model in .45 ACP caliber.
The Glock Model 17 in 9mm is also used, but more so in foreign countries due to the supply of .40 S&W ammo. 9mm Lugar.Parabellum ammo can be had in just about any part of the world.

A duty weapon should be of sufficient caliber to stop the criminal with 1 or 2 shots, but not of large enough caliber to be unmanageable due to recoil. The .40 caliber is a good caliber for this use. It is the officer's or the department's choice of makes. I carried a Smith & Wesson through my career, but the Glock or the Beretta are both fine choices.

S & W .38 P Special revolver.
I know, it's a revolver, but the sound itself will intimidate the crap outta your enemies. Within 50 feet, there will be no chance of "escape" for them.
After firing a couple of shots from behind the door of your squad car, the gangsters and homies will think you have a cannon you're using! I have this gun for when times get tough, but I accidentally shot it once, and now I'm afraid to even go near it.

Well, if I were to bet my life on a fast shooting, portable, reliable, and powerful weapon, i would recommend the Springfield XD in .45 ACP. Sweet gun. They come in .40 S&W as well, or if your game they also come in 9mm. But i like the 45.
