You HAVE TO go to the dentist. I am sorry. If it hurts that bad, it is probably an abcess. I know because I had one last weekend. I was already taking Motrin and using Orajel and it was killing me it still hurt so bad. I too was waiting for insurance to kick in. Finally I could not take it any more and had an emergency root canal. It is expensive, but the crown is also expensive and they don't do that for another 4 weeks.
So here is what you do:
1. Get root canal now ($500 - $700)
2. If you can't afford that they can do something for about $120 called "open and medicate" where they open the tooth and put medication in so the pressure is relieved. You really want the root canal though. However they could do that now and then do the root canal in a few weeks if your insurance kicks in that soon.
3. In 4-6 weeks if you have insurance get the crown done (about $750).
You cannot, I repeat cannot, continue on with your tooth like this. The infection is sourcing from inside the tooth where your immune system cannot fight it. It will spread to the rest of your body (face first) but your immune system will not be able to kill it off because it cannot touch the source (the tooth).
An untreated absessed tooth will continue to hurt worse and worse, and it can kill you.

I had the root canal done Monday, got prescription painkillers and antibiotics same day, and by Thursday I did not even need the painkillers because it improved so fast.
Also talk to the dentist about payment plans. Most will allow you to pay a few hundred a month until you're paid in full. Especially on emergency work.

I have 2 children and 1 on the way. The absolute worst pain I've ever been in was when I had nerve pain due to a horrible toothache. No joke. A normal toothache, no big deal but I don't think anything could be worse than nerve pain. ETA: I've never gone through labor without an epidural so I can't compare those 2.

dude, go to a dentist. Is it sensitive to hot, cold? Does it linger? Does it throb? Is it worse when you lay down? It's infected and you need some antibiotics. If it's less than 3 days Penicillin or Amoxicillin will work. If its been more, Clindamycin. Then, either an extraction or Root Canal is in your future. Good luck!
hint.. I'm not recommending this but if you, or anyone you know has any Amoxicllin or Penicillin 500mg, 4x a day, might work, as long as your not allergic to it.

What do you mean you can't go to the dentist until your insurance kicks in?
I don't know of any dentist that wouldn't accept you as a patient just because you didn't have insurance.
You most certainly can go, and pay for the services rendered.
And you should if you are in that much pain because there is no substitute for treatment.

Try putting a cold pack on it and rinse your mouth with warm salt water or peroxide. Don't wait till your insurance kicks in . I just got out of hospital over a tooth that is abscessed my face swelled so bad they had to put a drain tube in it to get out the infection.

Borrow the money...whatever necc. An infection so close to the brain is dangerous. Have a root canal for now....do the crown later, if covered by your insurance. If you don't..you'll end up at the hospital looking for relief, an abcess is more than one can tolerate plus damages the jaw bone.

go to the dentist. this pain will not get better, it will only get worse until you get it taken care of. this does sound like an abscess that will need a root canal. your dentist may be able to put you on a payment plan to help defer some of the cost. i know it sucks but you need to go to the dentist.
