I am thinking about buying an 07 wrangler. I am not sure of the differences in performance between the manual and auto transmission. I plan to drive mainly on the road and do some offroading. However, I will not be climbing the Rubicon trail anytime soon. So, what are the off roading benefits of a manual transmission? And could an auto transmission provide the same relative performance? Or would I be crazy to offroad with an auto transmission?

I would go with the manual also. the 3.8 liter is a dog of an engine and to top it off the 07 Is bigger and heavier. I test drove an 07 Rubicon. In order to zip around town I think the manual would be better, plus more feel. I think there is also more people who buy Jeeps would prefer a manuals. Its a guy thing. If you were buying a Mustang GT , would you want an automatic? HECK NO. While a Jeep aint no Mustang but when people think Jeeps They think manual transmission, unless their wife, shack up, or signifigant other cant drive a manual. I dont do serious offroading, but i love being able to find the perfect speed to crawl down a steep incline but I will say gas milage just a tad bit better and then the thing it is cheaper to replace a clutch and pressure plate then have your automatic transmission rebuilt. More parts meaning more parts to go wrong. There hasnt been a day I ever said I should have gotten an automatic.

What I would do is spend some of the money on the auto option and use it for the Mygig player,, that thing is sweet.

Good Luck

Can't agree with automatic folks.

Even if it IS for off roading. Personally I wouldn't get anything other than manual transmission. YOU control the shifts, rev and back-&-forths are a lot easier with a stick and clutch.

Maybe lots a folks like the idea of puttin something in drive and just Gas/Brake, but I gotta be more involved in my drive. The feel, and control, I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I would get the manual, the 6 speed is a excellent transmission and with the underpowered engine in the Wrangler it will help.

The answer to this question is buy what you like. ALL the hard core off road buggies run autos. But for more mild stuff both have their advantages and disadvantages. Personally I wouldn't buy anything but an auto for on or off road driving in a Jeep.

its your preference really...ive been driving a stick since i got my first ride in 1998. I love driving them, think it makes driving fun. I have a wrangler now, its a stick and i love it. i dont get offroad much but the times i have its been fine. if you thinking of doing slow, 4 low type offroading often then id probably go with the auto. but u dont sound like ur doing that....moral of my story: stickshifts are fun!! go with that.
