Why do dogs...?

Why do dogs always go for your crotch? I was wondering. Someone said they try to find out if you are a boy or girl?

Humans are visual and verbal. Meaning we look at each others faces and read the face to see the mood of the person and then talk to them.
Dogs are based on scent and body language.
They can tell sex, age, availabilty to breed and other things from scent. they learn your scent and recognise you from that. They read your body language for clues as to how you are feeling and your place in the pack.

In the dog world, sniffing each other's hind ends is a proper introduction, like us shaking hands. When they sniff your crotch they are finding out information, and they are learning your scent, that is their main way to recognise you.
