It is just regular bleached cooking flower. If you go to the baking section at your local grocery store you should find it. I usually even says all purpose flour on it.

It is plain white flour. I never buy self raising, I add baking powder to it for cakes etc. This way it is more versatile. The other flours are wholemeal, this means more of the bran has been left in the flour and it is better for you.
If you see strong flour, it is for bread. Don't use it as a replacement for plain because your sauces will have a very stringy texture.

Self-rising flour is all-purpose flour with added salt and leavening (baking powder). You will notice that recipes that call for self-rising flour do not call for baking powder. Make your own self-rising flour

All purpose flour is just the American equivalent of PLAIN flour in the UK; ie flour with no additives in it.

I had that problem once with an American recipe. If its for a casserole or hot pot dish, then I would use plain flour. If its for a cake or bread then self raising. For chapati or naan bread you need plain flour.
