First of all, which phrase do you think makes more sense.
Next, please tell me whether or not you think each of the following scenarios is considered a sin or not:
1. Executing a person who has been convicted of a major crime.
2. Shooting a man who's pointing a gun at you.
3. Shooting a man who's pointing a gun at a relative.
4. Shooting a man who's pointing a gun at a stranger.
5. You see a person walk into a crowded building and he appears to have explosives. To protect the people inside, you attack him.
6. Soldiers killing enemy soldiers.
7. You sell cars for a living. You see someone come to your shop and steal an expensive car. To stop him/her from getting away, you shoot at him.
8. You work at a convenience store. You see someone come to your shop and shoplift some candy. To stop him/her from getting away, you shoot at him.
Please feel free to answer as many or as few of the scenarios as you want. Use either religious or secular logic

One of the responses claims that the original text in Hebrew uses a word meaning "murder." I have heard from a rabbi fluent in Hebrew and familiar with theology that the Hebrew word used could translate as "murder" as easily as it could be translated as "kill."

Well, I for one would not kill to stop some one from the scenarios #'s 7 or 8. Just for the simple fact that those are material things. Call the police let them handle the situation. Now for #'s 2,3,45,&6, you are tryign to protect another living human being that has a right to live. Even the police don't have a problem with protecting your self or others from certain death. As for # 1 the Bible has a saying in it "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth". Should someone really get away with murder when they know what they are doing is wrong? I should like to think not. I hope that any one that sees this would come to the same conclusion, but there are different strokes for different folks.

We all sin, and Jesus died for all of them.Instead of telling if it is a sin, I will tell you my tahoughts about them.
1. I would keep them locked up.
2.Of course it depends on the situation. I would shoot. It is better not anyone point gun at me if they are bad guys.
3. I would shoot.
4. I would need to knw more of the situation, I would stay out if I can.
5. I would call the police. Remember, every call is not your call. : )
6. I understand that.
7. Not a right approach. I would call tha police and let them to catch that person. I would have an insurance.
8. The same as above.

The scripture you refer to is found at Exodus 20:13 "You must not murder."
If that scripture read "You must not kill", it could refer to animals, people, anything that lives. It would also contradict God's other laws which called for the execution of criminals. As far as your other questions go, killing for any reason is a precarious position to be in. Only God can see all the variables and make a final judgement on whether or not that person should die for what they've done or will likely do. This is why killing should not be taken lightly at any time.

The original Hebrew has it,"Murder".
Killing is acceptable in 1 - 4, and 6. In the case of #5 it isn't certain the person has Explosives, and assuming he does, attacking him/her could set off the Explosives. The rest are not legitimate reasons to Kill someone.

You need to do a Yahoo! Q&A search for your question. It's been asked several times. You might find your answer you are seeking amongst one of those already answered.
