What is the substance applied to boxers faces during matches and why?

It is vaseline or a similar substance, and its purpose is to make the face slippery to reduce friction with the leather of the opponents gloves. The intent is to reduce the possibility that the glove pulls the skin so as to cause a cut.

Usally it's glove leather in the middle of the ring, and vasiline in the corners until they are cut. Some cut men mix a coagulante in with the grease to slow bleeding from cuts. I wouldn't consider end swell or septic pencils a "substance", but you see that stuff all the time. In theory the grease is supposed to make it harder for the opponents punch to land flush.

vaseline, punchs slide off the face better. prevents cuts and helps stem the bleeding when already cut. some boxers have problems with repeating cuts because the vaseline is not removed properly after fights and hardens over the bone, this leaves then prone to more cuts. we also used to put it on our legs when playing rugby to slide tackles and keep your legs warm
