I have a 14 month old newfoundland female. i have had her for about a month. Wheshe was 5 months old, she snapped the bone in half about an inch above her elbow joint. Her vet confind her to a crate for about 2 months to promote healing. Now that I have her, I have taken her to my vet twice. Once for a physical, and once because she started limping on the same injured leg. It was really swollen at the joint and he put her on Rimadyl 100 mg twice daily. I was supposed to cut down to once daily after about a week. She has started limping again today so I started the twice a day again. Any vets or techs have any advice? She doesn't do a lot. She plays in the backyard a little and walks a couple of blocks before bed. I know she needs the exercisa and I am limiting it as much as I can. What options do I have to help her. I know that you don't have her x rays and that this is for advise only.

broken limbs take up to 6 mths to a year to heal properly, and with such a big breed her bones are still growing, get an xray to make sure that everything is still healing as it should, restrict walks when she is limping.....most dogs who have had a bad fracture will limp for many months afterwards.

See the vet again, or get a new one. It might not be related to the old injury - get some bloodwork, perhaps test for lyme.
Also, she might respond better to a different NSAID - my lab takes Deramaxx for her arthritic hips.

Swimming is a great low-impact exercise, and newfies naturally love it.

You may want to get a splint for awhile, in case the bone hasn't completely yet. Don't overdo it on exercising, give her much rest and love.
