The Bridge
I didn't believe,
Standing on the bank of a river
Which was wide and swift,
That I would cross that bridge
Plaited from thin,fragile reeds
Fastened with bast.
I walked delicately as a butterfly
And heavily as an elephant,
I walked surely as a dancer
And wavered like a blind man.
I didn't believe that I would cross that bridge,
And now that I am standing on the other side,
I don't believe I crossed it.
what is the meaning behind this poem?Please help!!

what i got from reading the poem is that a person wants to cross a bridge meaning do something life changing for them and they were scared to do it so its like they went into it like a butterfly because its something they always want to do it but walked like a elephant because they were scared and once they accomplished it it was unbelievable, they cant believe they had the courage to do it, but they did.

They committed suicide....
Observe:
Their state of mind and being is altered..."walked delicately as a butterfly...wavered like a blind man". Their mind is spinning adrenaline is rushing.
'I didn't believe I would cross that bridge", the person thought about crossing it before. It can't be about natural death, because we all know that we will die. Also little subtle hints...but its only my interpretation.

To me it's saying "I didn't believe I could cross that bridge, now that I did I don't believe it"
Some moral purpose I suppose.
Don't stop believing?

u life your life without a goal/expectation. u just take life one day at a time.
n d next thing u know it... u r already in your next phase of life.
or perhaps the youth period of your life has already passed.
or perhaps u've attained some sort of zen/satisfaction in life
that u've never expected to feel at this point of time in your life.
u went through couple of hardship/time & u pulled through.
well this is my opinion.

pretty obvious to me, but hard to put into words unless we know what the bridge is an analogy for....
