For school, we're not allowed to have music in 'apperantly it messes up your pace', so i was wondering what are some good thorughts to keep in your head while running long, boring distances?

During a race I'm envisioning the course ahead. I've ran it prior to the race and I'm thinking about my positioning in the race and where I can make a move.

During a casual run I also think of my position on the course. The goal is to always improve on your time so thinking back to prior runs that you had and where you were during your run when you "died" or had a surge can be beneficial.

I'm also focusing on my form. Feeling my feet hit the ground and how my legs are working, I'm checking my shoulders to make sure they're relaxed.

Breathing is something you could also focus on. The pace or rhythm of your breathing can help propel you through the course.

Lastly there is thinking positively. A mantra of sorts. Thinking of a specific time you want to hit and repeating that time over and over in your head. If you believe it, it will happen.

That is a very good question. I sometimes wonder the same thing.

Well when my school has to run the mile (every week) I usually think about my pace. I ask myself if I could keep my pace or if I could go faster.

Other times I think about other peopel, and how my day has gone.

I also think about songs. I play songs over and over in my head. I personally think that Kanye West's songs motivate me to keep going.

I just think about randmon things while I run; whatever comes to my mind I think about.

But I've noticed it would be better if I didn't think about all those random thoughts and just focus on getting better times.

It depends on what else I've done that day; usually I think about things like guys, food, how far I've got to go, food, how I'll feel when I'm done, food, water, food, and did I mention the food? :) Another thing, have you ever just talked to teammates while running? About food, of course (this is just what my team talks about the most...we love food.) Usually that's more fun than listening to music is anyway.

i think about running pretty much, its hard to get your mind of off. U can always think of some paces that u might want to run in the next few miles of ur run, thinking of workouts too.

I think about how good I will feel once I have completed the workout. Also, think about the changes you want to make in your body and how your run will affect them. Block out the pain and think about the end result.

why not sing a song in your head instead of listening to it?! as for music messing up your pace...I always run with music & it gives me a buzz!

Well I will tell you.First lap you don't really need to think of anything.2nd lap think of something you like (a food,a girl,song,anything).3rd lap whenever you feel like you will get tired think about something that makes you made(not just mad but try to enrage yourself). Then 4th lap try to drain yourself completly and how good it will feel to finsh.Besides when I am running real good I can't even think of any one thing for a long time.

I'm ususally thinking about where I'm going and how far it is until I'm done. Then there are the thoughts about twisting ankles and how much running sucks.
