i'm complete against to put kids that fast on drugs and i think parents should spend more time with theirs kids, then the kids would not need stuff like retalin,go and play with your kids, excercise, ride bikes, then they will calm down and power out their energy without drugs, but sure its much easyer to give them retalin

just to let your guys know,i'm a mother of 4 and they all very different, my youngest one have a lot of energy, but i never would put him on drugs, sports and spending time with him helps much more, that what kids need, parents getting lazy kids need to be kids and play and if parents can't handle it,its adhd and there we go give him drugs to calm them down,so they don't have the work with theirs kids, how should kids relase their energy when they just sit on the computer or playing gameboxes, what about the old way, sports ect.?

I competely agree, I worked in an elementary school with sec. ed. students ages 5-7, and over half were on ridalin, and after they were to have it they were not even the same people, they seemed very tired and not with it, but physicians are so willing to give it out now, just to keep the parents happy so they don't have to deal with their kids, but I do think there is an exception to all things and maybe some kids truly do need it but I think other things should be tried before resorting to drugs. I have 2 year old twins and they go back to a childrens hospital once a year so a neonatologist can see them beacuse they were 9 weeks early, and I was told that they seem to be very active and they started talking about adhd, I think it is way, way to soon to tell at 2 yrs. old, I would refuse to give them ritalin.

I think that more kids get diagnosed with ADD than really have it. Kids tend to be wound up and full of energy but they are kids. And go figure boys are worse! Most children can't sit still for a full school day. I have two kids and I can't sit still and do anything that I find boring for longer than an hour. I don't need meds for that. I just want a change of scenery. There are cases where kids do need intervention but I only agree with doing that after they have seen a specialist.

I mostly agree with you. I think that way too many kids these days are being put onto psychiatrics drugs without a proper and thourough diagnosis. However, I knew one boy growing up that absolutely needed ritalin and he functioned so much better on the drug. Drugs were the absolute last things that his parents tried, after everything else failed.

while i do believe some are to quickly "diagnosed", i also believe there are some children who truly benefit from ritalin or other drugs. add &adhd are real disorders but i think other methods should be tried before drug therapy. sometimes when all else fails, drugs may be necessary in order to help the child get on in life. it's my guess you have never known anyone with add or the parent of a child with it. you're very quick to judge. life isn't always black and white and we don't all learn the same things the same way. be more open minded and see things from another point of view.

Um, have you ever had a child diagnosed with adhd? My children don't have that, thankfully, but I have known kids who did. As Dr. Dobson says, if your child has adhd, you know it. While I agree that you should first try avenues of dietary change and behavior modification, this is not successful with every child. That's like saying you shouldn't give someone with bipolar medication.
Instead of being so judgmental, how about cutting other parents a break. You don't know what it's like.
