It's due to a lactic, that'd acid which crystallises in the muscle from your blood as a by product of anaerobic respiration.
That is respiration without oxygen.
The muscle then has to be warmed up and stretched to get it moving again. The addition of heat encourages the acid crystals to dissolve back into the blood and so relieve the cramp.

Build up of lactic acid causes the cramp. Stretch and drink plenty of water. Put favorite music on to distract from the discomfort/pain.

Usually lactic acid is built up in the muscle and for the most part it is a lack of Potassium in the body. Salt under the tongue works for me or just eating a couple bananas.

Straighten the leg and massage the affected area. This will stretch the muscle and subsequently ease the pain

In my case, it is usually caused from overuse. Your first instinct is not to move, but it is best if you move your calf or foot to loosen up the knot even if it hurts. There is less residual pain in the morning this way.

cramps arises from lack of water and electrolytic salt ..muscle fibres get strained also from overstressing, sudden accidental pulled down of muscles, occational streching while undergoing muscle exercises, stiffed muscles etc,...it is painfull...first get laid to full rest position, try to stop streering the effective part, get a little massage very lightly, try streering or rotating slowly, cool down that part by icebag, try drinking water in a bit from time to time, you can apply painkiller magic spray if avilable.

As painfull as it is, stand on it. I've been told that Potassium can help prevent the cramps, so stock up on bananas.

Try to relax and rub them down. It could be from a lack of potassium in your diet. Eat bananas, baked potatoes (including skin), and other potassium-enriched foods.

stretch your leg out in front of you (whilst sitting down) and grab hold of your toes on that leg. Pull the toes forward.
