Arbitrations are legally binding. They are decided by arbitrators who are knowledgeable about the different aspects of cases or situations and are impartial to either side. They listen to both sides and issue a arbitrary ruling. Mediation on the hand is more casual. Like if you are involved in a law suit. You can often opt to have a mediator involved. This is also an impartial outsider who just mediates the conversation between you and the other person and keeps discussion ongoing between the parties until the parties agree on a resolution.

Both try to make amends, mediation to help sort out problems between two people, like in a divorce situation, arbitration is usually when you are suing someone, and you need to prove your case, both parties are also trying to come to an agreement of a different kind, not emotional.

Basically NOTHING !! They both are invoked when parties are unable to reach an amicable answer to a ? or what ever. Then a mediator/arbitrator(Also called"Ombudsman") is brought in to settle the issue, His/Her decision is usually ABSOLUTE !! These folks make BIG $$ to play "Babysitter " !!!
