does he know the comand? if not try to get him to sit then with a treat (hold out of his reach towards the ground) and say firmly "Down" (or your comand). If he does down praise him and give him the treat. If not either put pressure on his back or on his leash. If that doesn't work you may have to lay him down while giving the comand. Always use positive reinforcement. Start slow. Don't expect a 3 minute down your first try. Once you dog is used to the command then try and lengthen the time. Good Luck!!! Have fun spending this time with your dog!!!! :)

A entle Leader is for leash training a dog that pulls. It would be no help to you to teach your dog down.
You need to get into some basic obedience classes.
They can teach you how to train the dog and it provides wonderful socialization for the dog and a nice distraction that will teach the dog to look to you for guidance in any situation.

I've found that using a "choke" collar works very well; I used it a lot when I was doing dog training.
I have a question for you: have you taught the dog to sit yet? If not, work on the "sit" command before the "down" command.

Nah, you don't need a gentle leader. You can train him easily.
Hold food on the ground in front of him. When he lies down to eat it, say "down" and praise.
Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Well, repeat, anyway.

That was the exact name I was think of. That's crazy. Although I was thinking of Reese.
Be patient with your dog. In due time. Be sure to rub the belly and give treats!
