You are literally hearing something that your parents can no longer hear. The whistling is part of what's coming through on the speakers, but most adults over the age of about 18 can no longer hear it. We lose sensitivity to high pitches very early in life, but you're still young enough that you can hear the sound. My son was the same way; I simply had to turn the volume down for the sound to be tolerable to him.
This is probably the first generation who's had to deal with it; people my age (50+) generally didn't have TVs with responsive-enough speakers when we were your age to have to deal with the problem in the first place.
I would imagine that the only way you're going to be able to prove this to them is to get somebody with an oscilloscope to demonstrate that this sound does, in fact, exist. I would think that there would be some sort of filter that could be put on the leads to the speakers that would block pitches above a certain level.
Good luck!

Ah Jennifer - it's a well known fact that youngsters like yourself can hear higher pitched noises than we old folks. Recently a device to make teenagers stop gathering in certain areas was based on this principle. Years ago I complained about a high pitched whistle from a tv in a shop and was totally embarassed when everyone else in the shop said 'I can't hear it'! I felt like a freak! I don't know what the solution for you might be - perhaps consult a tv engineer about it, or wear ear plugs!

It is probably the very high voltage that,t drives the picture tube.Used to be known as EHT whistle at one time. It usually has a frequency of over 20k cycles and is just about at the limit of the human hearing range. It would appear that your hearing is more acute than your parents, probably because you are younger, which would explain why you can hear it and they can't.Not a lot you can do. Send your parents out to the conservatory and you watch the set in the lounge perhaps.

It is almost impossible to live with tinnitus but you don't have to. If you are hearing the noises, whether all the time or intermittently, you must seek treatment immediately. But sadly, conventional treatments only treat the symptoms of tinnitus and may provide temporary relief at best.
The only way you could ever get rid of your tinnitus for good is by following the holistic approach to healing. By using a multidimensional treatment for tinnitus, we are tackling all tinnitus causative factors and eliminating these triggering elements from the root. This is the only path for permanent freedom from tinnitus.

Your age tells most of the story. Young people can hear higher pitched sounds than adults to the point of being annoying to painful. There's not much you can do until you turn 20 to 25.
This has been well documented and in fact, they are using this technique to keep young people from gathering or loitering at various businesses such as fast food restaurants. The word they use in this article is "repel" in which they're actually selling devices to produce this sound. It's called the Mosquito Sound Repellent.
They're also incorporating this sound frequency into cellphone ring-tones as teens can hear it but their teachers can't.

It could be high enough to be one of those sounds that people over a certain age can't hear.
That means people are unlikely to believe you!! Call up a TV person and get them to come in and tell them what I told you about older people not being able to hear it.
And lets report the guy above........

It's simple, your hearing is superior to your parents hearing, and the tv has a fault. They should trust your hearing and get it fixed while it is still under guarantee. Usually only old tv's make this noise, it is a bad sign for the tv.
