>> I can't stand that phoney southern accent, or all the fatty crap she cooks . . .<<

Well, I'm not a Paula Deen fan for various reasons, but having grown up in the South I can definitely say that she doesn't have a fake Southern accent.

She does have a *heavy* regional accent though.

Southern accents really vary a lot by particular location in the South, as well as by rural vs. city accents, etc., and there's actually no *one* Southern accent.

All Southern accents do have some characteristics in common**, but they also have lots of other pronunciation and rhythm things that make them quite different (...even though all may be lumped together by non-Southerners, if several people with different Southern accents said the same sentence right after each other though, anyone would easily be able to hear the differences... but that seldom happens).

**examples would be leaving off the last consonant of a word (goin' instead of going)
... and pronouncing a short e as a short i (as in the word pen -- it's pronounced "pin" in Southern
..... but Paula's pronunciation would be pih-yun --which makes the one-syllable word into two syllables, the second of which is often preceded by a y sound (...this happens in some strong Southern accents, but definitely not all of them)

She is definitely a lot of fun, and has a great personality.

She has had problems with agoraphobia and depression in her life, while her sons were very young.

I do not think that she is actually on anything medicinal currently, that is just her personality.

I love when she comments about the amount of butter she uses by saying "I'm not your doctor, I'm your cook so don't blame me..." in that wonderful accent of hers. It just cracks me up.

I just had to edit this, when I saw some responses saying that they hated her, how can you hate someone who has worked hard all her life and built wonderful restaurants for her and her family as a business; beginning with making sandwich and dessert lunchboxes in her kitchen??? Sounds like a wee bit of jealousy there.

If the people with that hate word in their vocabulary lightened up a bit, they would have a more fun life.

It was obvious to me that you were being cute, and having fun with this, and you liked her; others took this too seriously; or possibly didn't read the entire question and following comment.

You have a great day ,I think I may be finding a great dessert to make for my friends and family for tonights dinner and I'll use real butter too!

I love Paula Dean.
Excellent cook and loads of personality.
Have you ever watched her bio? Started from absolutely nothing making bag lunches to sell and just look at her now.
Don't we all wish we were half as lucky. I give her a lot of credit.

It's called Fresh Southern Hospitality, with a little butter added to smooth off the edges.

Paula on a drug? I haven't heard that one before. I mean, I don't like her really, but she's never struck as the drug-taken type.
If anything itd be like caffine.

Her drug is enjoying life and being happy and looking for the good things. Try it! It'll work like a charm for anyone. And she is exactly like what you see on t.v.

I love watching her show, I gain weight just watching it.

I'd bet she's just like that with her bubbly personality. That or she's rushing on sugar. Have you seen those desserts she makes?

Yummmm
