If you're in severe pain, you shouldn't be exercising at all, you should be resting it. Once the pain is no longer severe, then start with light exercises
My physical therapist suggested a recumbent bike for me after my knee surgery (between PT sessions).

first you have to sought out the actual cause of pain...particularly if the pain is acute or severe, try to rest your knees for some days .then if pain relieves or faints a little ..practise rotating,.steering,streching and folding knees,,if you can but you have to consult a doctor if your pain is long term persistant and getting acute day by day..to sought out actual cause of your knee pain.
